Fasting is a mine game. Changes nothing. God changes. Things. That’s trying to prove something. God knows.

The fact that God changes His treatment of us in response to our choices has nothing to do with His character. In fact, because God does not change, He must treat the righteous differently from the unrighteous. If someone repents, God consistently forgives; if someone refuses to repent, God consistently judges. He is unchanging in His nature, His plan, and His being. He cannot one day be pleased with the contrite and the next day be angry with the contrite. That would show Him to be mutable and untrustworthy.

Matthew 6:17-18. Jesus told his listeners they were to fast privately so that their “Father who sees in secret will reward [them] openly.” After giving, praying, and fasting are done in secret, God rewards openly (vv 4,6,18). To lose sight of the meaning of any one of these disciplines by playing to the crowd was regarded by Jesus as hypocrisy (6:2,5,16). Those who work for the praise of the crowd may receive it, but that is all the reward they will have. Divine recompense is guaranteed by the close of the age, if not before (cf. Matt 24:45-46; 25:14-23; 2 Cor 5:10).
