This was a community overseen by the Rev James (Jim) Durkin, an ex- AoG minister who had been associate pastor with Duck Iverson at Portland Bibke Temple in the 1960s. So where dies the Jesus Movement fit in with the “new wave” theory? Frankly it doesn’t. It was a unique and genuine move of God among counter-culture radicals and loosens who turned their whole lives over to God. People think it was open air baptisms and a lot of Jesus rock and bumper stickers at Calvary Chapel – but that was only the visible, commercial end of it. Travel the dusty Highway 101 up north a few hundred miles for the true and nity-gritty picture. Larry Eskridge wrote a good history published by OUP about 3 years ago – but even with some fragmentary leads from me, even he doesn’t get the whole picture of the N. Cal Jesus Movement. That’s because it was so hidden, and various myths still abound, and memories and sequences of events do get jumbled. I can’t hope to write an objective history (Larry has done an excellent job by the way – and I highly recommend you purchase his book) but I am very much trusting God I’ll be permitted to write my memoirs. Your prayers for this are much appreciated.

That is NOT a photo of Jim Durkin. Unfortunately my post has lots of typos; will try to correct when on a proper pc. Don’t know WHERE or WHY that photo appeared but it emphatically is NOT Jim Durkin.

That was my home – the one in the background. The one in foreground was the leather shop.
