Troy Day Just to make sure we are on the saved page, do you agree with me that people can be saved without repeating a prayer after the preacher? You agree with me that Christians before 1900, the apostles, the Christians in the Bible, etc. could all be saved, right?
The sinner’s prayer, some versions of it at least, are an attempt to get people to confess and believe according to Romans 10:9-10. One of my concerns is that it seems like a lot of evangelicals have gotten the idea that repeating a ‘sinner’s prayer’ after the preacher is what saved…the tradition we have that isn’t specifically Biblical..leaving out the Gospel part which actually saves if people believe it. So you see preachers having people repeat prayers without explaining who Jesus is, that He died on the cross, the cross was about, or the fact that God raised Him from the dead.
I see the ‘sinner’s prayer’ as ____A_____way of doing things. But without the gospel it is a rather empty ritual, or at least does not do what it is supposed to do.
Sometimes evangelicals do not make sense. They think the people who go to the traditional churches that repeat the apostle’s creed– which explains the Gospel– are not saved unless they go to their own kind of church after their preacher who does not explain or proclaim the Gospel.
Not always. Many preachers do preach the Gospel. And neither creed nor prayer saves without faith.
As far as other ways to do it, how about have people profess their fath, confess Jesus as Lord, and then baptize them.
I am not opposed to ‘the sinner’s prayer.’ I am opposed to doing that and declaring people saved without the Gospel. I have led people to confess by repeating a prayer and be baptized. And I don’t know how many people I’ve asked to repeat a prayer, especially before I got clarity on the issue, but what I was trained to do was more scripture based than what I see in some churches today.

Troy Day I have encouraged people to believe the gospeland to be baptized. I did not do that in an ‘altar call’ situation though.

that’s a good question for Link Hudson I’ve stated on many occasions that the sinners prayer debate as proposed by Paul Washer is simply irrelevant to Pentecostal soteriology

I believe a lot of people are saved when they pray the prayer but I believe a lot of people just say they he prayer and that aren’t sincere and think just because they said it

It is just like repeating the apostle’s creed or kids breaking into the church and filling the baptistry just to go swimming. If you do not have faith it does not have the same effect.
Of course the problem with a lot of sinners prayers is they are not preceeded by preaching on how to get saved and the prayer sometimes doesnot mention the cross or resurrection. A tool to confess faith according to Romans 10 has turned into a ritual without scripture or gospel behind it in many cases.
I call it easy repeatism. Easy believism implies there is something preached to believe.

Hopefully none! We don’t need fads, but that which is lasting to bear fruit and change lives. With the Holy Spirit, what more would one need. People who aren’t grounded in the Word and their faith are still needy, and are the ones who usually follow after fads.
