Hope has its place in the foundation of Pentecostal theology. Many refer to it as the blessed hope.
The presence of the Holy Spirit in the Community of faith is a foretaste and assurance of God’s promised full redemption.
In 1 Cor. 1:22 and 5:5 we learn that the Spirit is a kind of earnest money, or first installment that guarantees the future fulfillment.
The Spirit endowed body exists within this present age as a sign of what is to come. The community of faith is already prefiguring the redemption for which it waits.
Our existence as part of the new creation serves to shape our behavior as we humbly obey.
Thus, we have the practical, “how we should live” ethical guidance in the epistles. And we have the admonition to “examine ourselves.”
We are to join Him in the fellowship of His suffering while we wait for the redemption of the body and to remind ourselves every time we “eat this bread and take this cup” of the Lord’s death “till He comes.”
This blessed hope resulted in the first and second century greeting, “Maranatha” which is translated “The Lord is coming.”
