True, as put forth by the New Perspective on Paul (NPP), ‘works’ is a reference to the Law (Torah) of Moses and not the commandments of Jesus. But he is wrong about Paul teaching this as only applying to Gentiles. It applies to all, Gentile and Jew alike. True, Paul did not see circumcision as forbidden. But neither is it (and other laws such as clean and unclean foods) a requirement for Jews. The true Jews are those who teach the Israel of God, those who belong to Jesus, the true King of the Jews. The Judaizers of course opposed Paul.

Nothing tricky about it. Just exegete the authorial intent.
