Some of the backstory and personal encounters involved in the 2023 Asbury revival

One week before the big revival surprise of Feb. 8, a coalition that backs the Collegiate Day of Prayer released a promotional video Feb. 1.

The video starts with a narrator saying, “Fifty years ago, something extraordinary happened on one college campus.”

Then a witness from the time adds: “I thought I had seen everything. But today, I saw something that I have never seen before.”

A news anchor then comments: “It started at 10:00 yesterday morning. It didn’t end at 11:00 yesterday morning. It didn’t end at 11:00 last night. In fact, as Jim and I took the air, it was still going on.”

Then others add: “It all started when one student gave his testimony. That was followed by another. And the testimonies have been going ever since. … And as it spread, people began coming in from all around.”

    Sound familiar?

Then Francis Chan, an evangelical preaching megastar, comes onto the video saying: “God, would you show your mercy on him, on her just the way you did with me? Because this is their only hope. We need him to change their hearts so that they can change the direction of our nation. We’re asking you, please, join us, join us for this day of prayer, join us in praying for these young people, believe that God can usher in something new through the power of our prayers.”

But Chan won’t be the only evangelical celebrity in attendance. According to the promo video description, Baptist pastor Rick Warren and worship leaders from the charismatic revivalist church International House of Prayer also will be involved. These events spreading across the nation are preplanned by evangelical marketing experts.

How can people claim the events are not about personalities when the promo video features Francis Chan, and its description mentions Rick Warren and other celebrities coming to the campus Feb. 23 for an Asbury revival-inspired day of prayer?

Dr. Kevin Brown, Asbury University president, addressed why they were “stopping” the revival on the school’s website:

I have been asked if Asbury is “stopping” this outpouring of God’s Spirit and the stirring of human hearts. I have responded by pointing out that we cannot stop something we did not start. This was never planned. Over the last few weeks, we have been honored to steward and host services and the guests who have traveled far and wide to attend them. The trajectory of renewal meetings is always outward—and that is beginning to occur. We continue to hear inspiring stories of hungry hearts setting aside daily routines and seeking Christ at schools, churches, and communities in the US and abroad.

The effort by committed men and women on our campus to redirect energy, forsake other obligations, work tirelessly around the clock, and provide single-minded labor to accommodate our students and incoming visitors has been the high point in my career. In fact, it may be the most extraordinary act of collective Godliness and hospitable goodwill I have ever witnessed in my life. I am forever grateful. I am forever changed.

Troy Day Was Francis Chan involved at the beginning of the revival? Who started it? I keep reading stories like “no one started it, no one’s leading it”. What are the facts behind such claims?

ahaaa that’s why Peter Vandever has been quite of course – no surprise

Mike Bickle, the founder of the International House of Prayer in Kansas City, is a false prophet who is aligned with the Kansas City Prophets, better known as the Kansas City False Prophets. He is a highly popular figure in the charismatic movement and hosted several conferences with former Southern Baptist Convention president, Ronnie Floyd—yet he is associated with several aberrant movements, including the New Apostolic Reformation and the Latter Rain movement.

Bickle allowed a random man who called himself Augustine to prophesy in his church, which he claims led to him hearing God speak to him audibly. Bickle and his followers are known for their problematic prophetic readings, which are often vague, ambiguous, and inaccurate. They are also associated with the Latter Rain movement, which includes false teachings about the roles of apostleship and prophets in the church, Christian ecumenism, and Dominion Theology.

Bickle also makes the heretical claim that the church causes the Great Tribulation and that Jesus will not return until the Church starts “globally crying out” for him to return. These claims are incompatible with the Christian faith as the Scriptures do not teach them. Bickle’s teachings are blasphemous and dangerous and should be avoided.

And these are all the people who are headed to Asbury University next week to conduct a huge false prophet festival. According to Collegiate Day of Prayer, “Let’s ADOPT and saturate EVERY CAMPUS in America in prayer … and join us LIVE from Asbury University on Feb 23rd at 8-10pm ET with special guests Rick Warren, Francis Chan, Allen Hood and worship leaders from International House of Prayer, Circuit Riders + Black Voices Movement, and Met By Love Worship. Let’s believe God for REVIVAL amongst believers on college campuses and SPIRITUAL AWAKENING amongst the lost. Father, revive the saved and save the lost!!”

Troy Day Isn’t it Pentecostal to let ‘random’ Christians to prophesy in the church? What would be wrong about hearing the audible voice of God? Some of the arguments here don’t seem to really fit well.

I’d have to see specific allegations, not filtered through ‘discernment ministers.’ Some ‘discernment’ websites are written by cessationists who have problems with spiritual gifts and their own theological misunderstandings.

Troy Day I was talking about your points of criticism against Mike Bickle. If its ‘Pentecostal’ to let random people prophesy in church, why would Bickle allowing that be a piece of evidence against him? And why would a claim to hearing the audible voice of God be some kind of evidence against the individual who made the claim… from a Pentecostal perspective?

Link Hudson What evidence against him? What are you talking about – are you talking about Rick and Francis wanting to take overt Asbury ?

I think we should wait to judge until after the collegiate day of prayer. Let’s examine what occurs there vs what happened in the past couple of weeks.

So your thesis is this was planned and not spontaneous? I find it interesting it ends when the movie about Jesus Movement that started at Asbury 1970 starts in theatres.

J.D. King Is Francis Chan a false teacher?
    Category 4
Verdict: Various discernment ministries have proven beyond a reasonable doubt that Francis Chan is a false teacher.
