So with Christmas upon us how do we explain the different genealogies listed in Matthew and Luke? By Jewish tradition genealogy his traced through the father. Paul states in Romans 3:1 that Jesus is from Davids seed. We understand that Jesus was born of a virgin, Mary, and conceived by the Holy Spirit. So how do we explain that Jesus is from the lineage of David by the seed of David.

Matrilineality in Judaism or matrilineal descent in Judaism is the tracing of Jewish descent through the maternal line. Virtually all Jewish communities have followed matrilineal descent from at least early Tannaitic (c. 10-70 CE) times to Modern times. Jesus’s line is traced through Mary.

There are many differences in the two lineages suggesting two different lines. Plus Luke says as it was supposed son of Joseph which suggests doubt on account of the author. Luke records Mary’s. Matthew records Joseph’s

I’m correcting my previous statement. I’m learning as we speak. The Greek for as was supposed means by law. So by law Joseph’s lineage is Mary’s. But Luke records Mary’s lineage. Which by mosaic law of marriage is also Joseph’s. Thank you Troy Day i was previously wrong. This group is amazing I’m learning so much. Keep up the excellent work brother
