To confess Christ FIRST you need to KNOW the Gospel, why Jesus was sent, what sin is, why humans are under condemnation, the Grace of God and saving faith and, last but not less, repentance: John the Baptist, Jesus, Peter in their sermons always said: repent and believe the gospel. If we are preaching something less than that we are not preaching the gospel. Modern Christians want to see converts the same way they want their food: fast, it doesn’t matter if the quality is bad. If you don’t want to hell just ask Christ into your heart? That’s it? Really? Catholics do that too, I know Catholics that pray the sinners prayer and they continue their lives as always without a change because they don’t understand in their spirits, they are only repeating a prayer (for a Catholic is normal to repeat existing prayers like the Our Father or Hail Mary). There can’t be real converts unless a clear exposition of the gospel be made before.

I saw a video clip of Oral Roberts giving a sinner’s prayer in the ’50’s. He asked people who believed in his prayers to respond. Then he had them repeat a short prayer that included ‘God have mercy on me a sinner.’ I didn’t hear anything about the cross or the resurrection, etc. in the context of the prayer, but I did not go back and hear the whole sermon either.
The hypothetical man who prayed that prayer in the temple left justified before God, and that may have been Oral Roberts rationale.

The man in the temple knew that he was a sinner and needed God’s mercy, he was a Jew in a Jewish environment knowing the law, the commandments, the prophecies, the calls to repentance in the Old Testament, etc., he knew why he needed God’s forgiveness. A modern day man can’t even understand what is sin or why sin is wrong. A preacher asks people: do you believe in God? They will probably answer “yes”; do you believe in Jesus? The answer could be “yes”; do you want to go to heaven? The answer will be “yes”; and then the preacher says: ok, repeat this prayer after me. They pray together and then the preacher says: excellent, now you are saved and going to heaven. WAIT. was that biblical? No it was not! That’s playing a dangerous game both for the preacher and the new “believer”. Everybody wants to go to heaven the problem is that people don’t want to be with GOD in heaven because they are sinners. They want to live their lives like always and at the same time go to heaven and then we have statements like: “this man prayed a prayer 20 years ago so now he is in heaven” even if that person lived a life of sin. Then come the arminians saying: “well this man was saved but lost his salvation because he lived in sin all his life”. Have you considered a 3rd option?: that man was never saved because he never heard the gospel, he only repeated a prayer. Repeating the sinners prayer has no power by itself, it’s not hocus pocus, a true believer will confess what is in his heart once he believes in the Lord, that’s the confession romans 10:9-10 is talking about.

That’s fine to read something, but if they have not been drawn by the Holy Spirit and felt remorse in their hearts..I’ve saw to many do that and thinks everything is alright. .If the church world would come back under conviction and get right.2 cor.5:17

I agree Troy and also I can’t find in scripture where we ask Jesus into our heart. We must be born again..
