The United Methodist Church is struggling to maintain unity amid deep divisions over Scripture and sexuality, the presiding bishop of America’s second-largest Protestant denomination acknowledged. Responding to rumors of a potential breakup at the quadrennial United Methodist General Conference, Bishop Bruce Ough said Tuesday (May 17) that the leadership is “not advancing or advocating any plan of separation or reorganization of the denomination.”

It seems to me that it’s just the visible body that calls itself
“church” that is not united on this issue… Fact is, just as in the “church in the wilderness” there was a “mixed multitude” who weren’t actually of Israel (Ex 12:38,) even so in the church, there are those who call themselves Christian, who are not truly of Christ.

They’re not splitting up…YET. “Yet” is the operative word. Their Council of Bishops has been directed, in true Methodist fashion, to set up a commission to examine and possibly edit all the passages in their Book of Discipline with regard to human sexuality.
They will come back at either a special called General Conference in about 2 years or so, or wait until the next regular GC in 2016 to make determinations on the matter. Splitting is not entirely off the table, but the can has been given a long punt down the road.
IMO (speaking as one who is still only in the most technical sense a United Methodist simply because I haven’t moved my membership since I moved away), the fix is in.
