“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” – Isaiah 41:10 Jails and prisons are men with consequences. Sometimes they come to a service because it’s the only time they can get out of their cell. Or mix with another block. So they’ll bring canteen items or notes on their cases or warnings to their friends. Networking. Usually they’re not a distraction in the Bible study. And things can go badly. There’s aggression and false doctrine. But usually the guys come to get prayer for there case or try something that might help them get out of a jam. Sometimes it’s sincere. But you just never know. I didn’t know what to expect with one young man. He had a double homicide. He was a gangster and a pantheist. He had doubts too. But he was sorry for what he had done. I worked with him for months. Praying for him and giving him verses. He especially liked Isaiah 41:10. He knew he was guilty. He would never beat the case. He was going to prison for life. It was a comfort to him. It’s a great verse. After many weeks and some good Bible studies on Jesus Christ his Cross his sacrifice for sin and his willingness to forgive he prayed to receive Christ as his Saviour. This meant also he would have to renounce his family and gang which was no small thing. He was sentenced to 42 years no parole. I don’t want to say this but sometimes the guys will renounce there faith in Jesus Christ and go back to their old ways. He was a real man about it. The thing that so touched me was after he was sentenced he stood up in Bible study and said I’m going to prison a Christian. I never seen anybody stand that tall in my life. Double life “I’m going on with Jesus” Jesus forgave him. And he couldn’t let it go…
