PERSPECTIVE: There was a new lady in our S S class yesterday and she brought up the shooting in Orlando and allowed that it was God punishing the gay people in that nightclub. I know my class and realized that they wouldn’t jump to that conclusion. So I pointed out to her that there were hundreds of such places all across the U S and asked if God was picking on that one particular group? Then I reminded her that a shooter visited a prayer meeting just a year ago and killed as many as he could. Well I may be wrong she said.
It’s a time to remember that approximately 70 people are killed every day from gun related shootings and accidents here in America. A time for spiritual leaders to think of ways to tone down the rhetoric and disarm the hate and cowboyism that is so pervasive in our country. Yes I hold ISIS accountable but also put a lot of blame on Hollywood and Television for teaching millions how to kill.

Jim Price I agree. There was the time when Aids first came out in the ’80s that people were afraid. There were/are good people affected by it. I understand the Sodom/Gomorrah aspect of Judgment. I remind folks Judgment begins in God’s house first. I am not comfortable that the attack happened at a bar / with LGBT / terrorist attack / on American soil / on a sunday / with guns / innocent people killed. But that does not stop the effectiveness of prayer / for God to reach the loss / for people to change / come to Salvation.

    “Cowboyism”… Interesting…
I don’t think “cowboyism” is to blame. It’s the heart of the cowboy that controls his guns. They’s good’uns and bad’uns.

And where the bad’uns run wild, what’s needed is good’uns.
That’s how the west was tamed.

By the way, how do you think this will affect the overall tone of “tolerance” in this country?
I am of the opinion that it will probably heighten the intolerance of all “fundamentalists” no matter what their religion… thus increasing pressure on Christians to affirm the LGBTQ ideology.

Of course, it’s reprehensible that this attack happened… anywhere! Those who love God and their neighbors, would not want this to happen to anyone. And those who claim to be Christians and go around saying things like “those people got what they deserved” only bring shame to the gospel.

I agree. ISIS is quick to take credit for any events whether they were actually involved or not as they use such to gain recruits and to stoke fear and hatred. I am a heterosexual male but have several friends who are gay or lesbian. Most are not wanting to push any political agendas and just work and live their lives quietly. I have met several former COG members who left the traditional church after coming out of the closet and admitted that they hate going to liberal gay churches and would love to return to their pentecostal roots but don’t want to be rejected or cause controversy for the local church. There are many gay persons who claimed to have been baptized in the Holy Spirit and still speak in tongues. The actual gay population is very small and we gave a far greater problem in our churches with members and even pastors who are adulterous, sexual addicts, or even pedophiles. I am not in favor of gay marriage or ordination but do have compassion for their struggles and desire to be accepted by the church.
