How significant is the difference between the Church of God and the Assembly of God? Is the difference as great today as it was 40 years ago?

Shouldn’t there be a Pentecostal ecumenism of all Pentecostals?

Imagine a United Pentecostal Church of America.

I am not sure I would use the “united pentecostal” name.

    “Jesus only – don’t think so”…..

It would be a united pentecostal group – sadly the name has already been taken -they do not represent a united pentecostalism

There was talk of a merger of the COG and PH back in the 60s. They discussed the name and story goes someone suggested the Pentecostal Church. The Church of God said we can’t give up God out of the name and the PH replied we are giving up Holiness. Lol

Timothy Nail, it was not a problem with the name. The problem was no official wanted to step down from their position on either side. Thus, no merger.

Yes I know Vinson Synan told me that pretty sure it was a joke.

That is the same problem we would have today in merging any of these groups.

Forty years ago, we were instructed never to go to an AoG church. There were a very worldly church and about 20 years ahead of the CoG in worldliness. However, there is little, if any difference between the two groups today. The CoG has moved in the direction of the AoG, no doubt due to its bible colleges no longer giving emphasis to the CoG doctrine of sanctification and its holiness standards.

The result will continue to be as history reveals to us. God will simply start another group that will be holy and have the power of God in its midst.

I don’t find much difference in Indiana between the two as far as preaching, worship, and holiness standards in the larger churches but in the small churches the COG has remained more traditional or old line. There are major differences in governmental structures for pastors to navigate as far as getting a church to pastor.
