Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing. For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age , even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil (Hebrews 5:11-14).

The Savior accepts everyone who will believe in Him (Acts 13:39). He also expects us to grow in the knowledge of Him and put away those things which are sinful (Colossians 3:5-10). The scripture plainly teaches that the mark of spiritual maturity is a life which has a strong sense of what is good and evil. This portion also teaches that immaturity is marked by unskillfulness in the word of righteousness.
Now, it is Ok to be a babe in Christ, but something is wrong when you have to part your mustache to put the bottle in your mouth. It seems to me that many place a premium on acceptance of sinful practices today through over emphasis on God’s grace. It appears the Church today often holds up a lifestyle of Christian immaturity as a model. In a gracious way, believers need lead others to become less flesh and more like Christ. The Church today needs those who are skilled in the word of righteousness and “whose senses and mental faculties are trained by practice to discriminate and distinguish between what is morally good and noble and what is evil and contrary either to divine or human law” (Heb. 5:14, AMP). I am thankful that I had leaders who lived a godly life before me as I began my walk with God. These men and women of God showed me by example how to grow closer to Christ. We should all seek to follow Jesus, mature in our walk with Him, so that, we may be, ”an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity (1 Timothy 4:12, AV).

Have you ever wondered where some of those Reformed folks get the idea that ‘prophesying’ means preaching.

This is from John Calvin’s commentary on I Corinthians 12.

Quote: By this term he means, (in my opinion,) not those who were endowed with the gift of prophesying, but those who were endowed with a peculiar gift, not merely for interpreting Scripture, but also for applying it wisely for present use.

Quote: Let us, then, by Prophets in this passage understand, first of all, eminent interpreters of Scripture, and farther, persons who are endowed with no common wisdom and dexterity in taking a right view of the present necessity of the Church, that they may speak suitably to it, and in this way be, in a manner, ambassadors to communicate the divine will.
