Scholar Bruce R. McConkie wrote:

Mary’s ancestors were the same as Joseph’s. She was a descendant through the royal line of King David. “Matthew says Joseph was a son of Jacob, and Luke says that he was a son of Heli. It appears, however, that Jacob and Heli were brothers and that Heli was the father of Joseph and Jacob the father of Mary, making Joseph and Mary first cousins with the same ancestral lines”

(Primary source: The Mortal Messiah, 4 vols. [1979–81], 1:316).

Matthew 1:16 states:

16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

Luke 3:23 is sometimes taken as a statement about Mary’s lineage:

23 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli,

Samuel Prakash Below is a biblically grounded, non-sensational explanation of why the prophetic office/function still exists in the Church, framed carefully to distinguish function from canon-forming authority—a distinction that is essential both theologically and pastorally.
    1. The Prophetic Office Is Rooted in Christ’s Ongoing Ministry
The New Testament does not present prophets as a temporary stopgap until Scripture was complete. Rather, prophets are listed as Christ’s gifts to the Church after His ascension.
“And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers…”
    — Ephesians 4:11 (ESV)
    The grammar matters:
Christ continues to give these roles, not merely gave them in the past. The purpose clause follows immediately:
“…to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood…” (Eph. 4:12–13)
