KNOWING HIM OR MOLDING HIM
An idol is anything worshiped other than the true God. Idolatry involves more than just hand-made images. It also includes fashioning an image of God in our mind to reflect our desires rather than God’s self-revelation in Scripture. Hear what Moses said to the children of Israel in Deut. 4: 19 “And take heed, lest you lift your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun, the moon, the stars and all the host of heaven, you feel driven to worship them and serve them, which the Lord your God has given to all the peoples under the whole heaven as a heritage” NKJV. Moses further says in verse 7, “For what great nation is there that has God so near to it, as the Lord our God is to us, for whatever reason we may call upon Him?” Moses goes on to say in verses 33-34 “Did any people ever hear the voice of God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and live? Or did God ever try to go and take for Himself a nation from the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs, by wonders, by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and by great terrors, according to all the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?” God brought you out of Babylon, now he needs to take Babylon out of you!
God chooses not to simply hand us a finished product, rather He invites us to be involved in the process. Faith responds to God’s initiative and allows Him to complete His work through us. You cannot be observant about what you do not know. Diligent study of the Bible is a prerequisite to walking in God’s ways. There is no substitute for spending time contemplating and studying the Scriptures. Like the Israelites, we are to hear, learn, and be careful to observe and obey God’s word. God always speaks from eternity, with perfect wisdom and foreknowledge. He created all natural and spiritual laws in the universe. Therefore, trust Him and live by His commands, for His words are always right. It is easy to be impressed with God when He encounters our lives, but God wants more than our admiration; He wants to see a heart change. Many are enamored with God’s power, but far fewer seek His heart to know His ways.
