And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep;
– 1 Samuel 3:3

There was no open vision in those days. The children of Israel had lost their way. Samuel was but a child when he was given the duty to keep the lamp burning. Such a simple thing to trim the wick and check the oil. But it was a sacred trust. He must have felt the rich tradition and the hope of Israel attending to the lamp Scripture shows he was a honest boy and willing to serve.
The Lord smiled on Samuel, it was there the Lord called him and revealed his word to him. God would judge Eli and his sons. God would judge the sleeping around and abusing his offering. What a terrible thing to know the judgment is coming, that tragedy is knocking at the door.
its important to serve God in the little things and be faithful to do our duty. God still tests the righteous and God still judges the wicked.
Dear friend, keep the lamp burning, be faithful in the little things, trim the wick and check the oil. dont be discouraged, in your service for Christ and his saving grace. one soul saved, is still one soul saved. peace.
