I agree completely with brother Christopher that the idea so prevalent that God tries to teach us through calamities is terrible theology. Read his excellent post below:

Christopher Alam:

Do not err, my beloved brethren.  Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning“. James 1:16-17

God is Good God. He is ALWAYS Good, and He NEVER changes.

God does not send disasters, calamities, and diseases upon this earth. The reasons why these things happen is twofold:

  1. We live in a fallen world.
  2. There is somebody called Satan who is evil.

Still, we see God move in people’s lives in the middle of bad situations. When people see this, they think that God was somehow behind the scenes engineering the calamity or disease, in order to fulfill His Purposes.

This is wrong. It God wants to fulfill His Purposes or teach us something He uses His WORD and His SPIRIT. He does not need the devil or his works in order to fulfill His purposes.

The truth is that God is so Good, that even in bad situations created by Satan, God can come into our situation and reach us, and do His Work in our lives. He is so merciful that He does this even when people end up in a bad situation because of their own fault.

I have heard people say things such as, “It was God’s Will that I go through that accident, because He wanted to do something in my life”. No it wasn’t. That is terrible theology. God does not need the devil’s help to do anything in anybody’s life.

The truth is that man can end up in bad situations, but God is so Good that He comes into our bad situations, helps us, gives us victory, and teaches us things that help us to grow.
