Will God use someone in the gifts of the Spirit if they refuse to speak in tongues?

Patricia Riley [10/26/2015 7:01 PM]
Why not?

Brody Pope [10/26/2015 7:09 PM]
If you don’t speak in tongues as the initial evidence of the infilling of the Holy Ghost, then God doesn’t fill you with his spirit and if youre not filled with the spirit, then how can you operate in the spirit using the gifts of the spirit?

Charles Page [10/26/2015 7:14 PM]
are there people who refuse to speak in tongues or just can’t speak in tongues? Are they forbidding to speak or are have they been forbidden to speak?

Jerry Lee Stencil [10/26/2015 7:16 PM]
“These signs will follow those who believe…” it is a belief thing.

Brody Pope [10/26/2015 7:17 PM]
I believe that one can refuse to speak.

Jerry Lee Stencil [10/26/2015 7:17 PM]
It is all a choice.

Link Hudson [10/26/2015 8:16 PM]
Zecharias was filled with the Spirit and prophesied before Acts 2. Historically, a lot of people have exercised spiritual gifts for whom we have no record of their speaking in tongues. There was a healing movement in the latter part of the 1800’s before the Pentecostal movement. I know people who’ve been used in healing or had visions and things of that nature who’ve never spoken in tongues. Neither one of them were against speaking in tongues. I don’t think they’d ‘refused’ to speak in tongues.

Link Hudson [10/26/2015 8:17 PM]
Jerry Lee Stencil, it doesn’t say everyone has to do each sign. You want to take poison or snakes and I’ll take tongues and healing?

Jim Kingsnorth [10/26/2015 8:20 PM]
Yes! God will do as HE wills, not according to the box we try to put Him in.

David Smith [10/26/2015 9:21 PM]
Sure! At least scripture perpetuates that it’s possible. Not to mention the fact that you see plenty of people in the church today operate specifically in the gift of knowledge and wisdom who are animatedly opposed to tongues. However, I believe tongues is vital to a believer.

Marc Eckert [10/26/2015 9:25 PM]
Yes. I’ve seen it done.

Don Kammer [10/26/2015 9:52 PM]
I am curious, why do you ask?

Charles Page [10/26/2015 9:54 PM]
seeking to understand the importance we place on speaking in tongues

Don Kammer [10/26/2015 9:55 PM]
Do you mean in doctrine or praxis? Who would you identify as “we?” Just asking?

Jim Blekfeld [10/26/2015 10:09 PM]
You guys look great!!!! We are involved in River of Life Worship Center (AG) in Blue Earth now. We have joined the church.

David Smith [10/26/2015 10:14 PM]
Classical Pentecostal theology would argue that spiritual edification takes place when one prays in tongues.

Charles Page [10/26/2015 10:14 PM]
doctrine and practice we, any born again child of God. Anyone serious about following Jesus (particularly this discussion group)

Jerry Lee Stencil [10/26/2015 10:14 PM]
Brother Link, we can choose to do, accept or believe whatsoever. IF Lord Jesus said that these sings would follow then they will with those who believe. To believe is contingent… there is value to speaking in other tongues. In prayer, praise, personal time… When we do so, our spirit prays with Gods Spirit for things that we have NO idea about. But if you are speaking in tongues then you can ask for interpretation and pray with understanding as well.

Stan Wayne [10/26/2015 10:19 PM]
Of course – Matthias was a gifted apostle before he spoke in tongues

Ed Lane [10/26/2015 10:49 PM]
Yes,God uses me

Curtis Fenison [10/26/2015 11:08 PM]
Come on people this is an easy answer.

1 Cor 12:29 Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?
30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?

These are rhetorical questions!

Stan Wayne [10/26/2015 11:12 PM]
This is a Pentecostal Theology site – surely you realize Pentecostalism teaches that rhetorical question is aimed at public manifestations

Mike Ringgold [10/26/2015 11:43 PM]
Why would you refuse the Holy Ghost?

Lennie Marx [10/27/2015 12:06 AM]
Charles if someone fights against G-d there is little chance G-d would dwell in them. This is indeed a strange question. On what principle could you possibility be attaching it to?

Charles Page [10/27/2015 12:36 AM]
The work of regeneration is an irresistible work of the Holy Spirit whereby He baptizes the unsaved into the body of Christ I Cor 12:13 This is an unconditional work according the the will of the Father and not the will of man.

Regeneration is separate from sanctification and that work is a conditional work according to the believing of the born again.

The baptism of the Holy Ghost is subsequent to being sanctified and is the promise of Jesus, who baptizes the believer in the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues. Sanctification and the baptism with the Holy Ghost is conditional on the regenerate following Christ in obedience and they can resist.

I don’t believe no one will able to operate in the GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT without the Baptism of the Holy Ghost.
If we are saying a person has the GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT operating in their lives, and they have not spoke in tongues this could be negating the fact that speaking tongues is the initial evidence of the infilling of the Holy Ghost

Did Balaam operate the GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT ? Link Hudson Do you mean the gift of cursing? Balaam is exactly why one cannot operate GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT without being saved , sanctified and filled with the Holy Ghost

It’s a pretty famous prophecy concerning Christ. “…there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel…”
      – Numbers 24:17
I don’t know I’m asking was he right with God?

I could not say that he was right with God. He loved the wages of unrighteousness and became a type of those who lead people astray into sin. You might argue that he got ‘cleaned up’ on the path when the donkey spoke to him and then went into sin after giving the prophecy, but there isn’t really evidence for that.

He also gave Israel’s enemies to get God to stop blessing them by leading them astray into fornication and idolatry.

Could we say that Caiaphas was right with God when he prophesied that one man should die for the people?

Troy Day Balaam blessed Israel. The Spirit of God came upon him. And there are people who operate in gifts of the Spirit who do not ‘refuse’ to speak in tongues, but who do not speak in tongues. Some would like to, but haven’t ever spoken in tongues.
