Hi FB friends. I am preparing a blog posting on discerning prophecy in the church. I have been well acquainted with the discernment tradition of the Catholic Church, which is excellent.

This tradition, with some modification, is very applicable in Pentecostal and charismatic settings. After all, the Catholic Church has had a lot of experience with nuns and monks giving out prophecies. The best of the Catholic literature if a book by Augustine Poulain, The Graces of Interior Prayer (1903). But I confess I am not very familiar with the newer Pentecostal and charismatic works in this area. Any suggestions?

William DeArteaga are you considering addressing Liberal Theology and the New Apostolic Reformation in the said post?

No, it is more of a a guide to prophetic utterance in the local church and how to avoid false prophecy.

I’m having difficulty with the body of work. The part I’m seeing seems to reference Catholicism. They just sainted the girls who claimed to receive an unbiblical vision from Mary. So it might be problematic for me. It is important and prophecy to be encouraged. How can I get to the work? Do I need to reboot the app.

The main job of a prophet is not foretelling but “forthtelling” the truth of God. Here is how God said we can spot false prophets:

    Jer 23:
22But if they had stood in my council,
they would have proclaimed my words to my people
and would have turned them from their evil ways
    and from their evil deeds.

Prophesying generally involves speaking ‘as carried along by the Holy Ghost’, though it could refer to singing, playing instruments, etc.
