    Hypostatic union is a term in Christian theology, employed in mainstream Christology to describe the union of Christ’s humanity and divinity in one hypostasis, or individual existence. The human body housing the Spirit of God.

    Troy Day Well, when I am asked a question, I never know how deep to go with the answer. As a Seminarian, I was required to give at length answers, but once out of the Academic arena, I find that most people prefer a short answer. Thus I use expediency, but since you, after the backhanded insult (which admittedly I deserved, had one of my students pulled a stunt like that he/she would have heard about it). Now to a more meaty answer…Hypostatic Union is the union of the two natures (Divine and human) in the person of Jesus. Jesus is God in flesh (John 1:1,14; 10:30-33; 20:28; Phil. 2:5-8; Heb. 1:8). He is fully God and fully human(Col. 2:9); thus, He has two natures: divine and human. He is not half God and half man. Therefore, there is a “union in one person of a full human nature and a full divine nature.” If you would like more information on it that would require a lengthy post that would do little more than “show off”, and that is not my intent. No other person has had the totality of God and Man in one package, thus He is truly unique, which He had to be for as the Scripture teaches in Matthew 9:1-8 that Only God can forgive sins. As for His humanity that is shown by the fact that He both ate and drank, God is a Spirit and has no need for food. I will stop now before the Professor in me begins to critique my post, and yours! May the Peace of Christ dwell richly in you Brother.

    Both God and man. He had to be both in order to be the sin-bearer and the Redeemer. Very God and very man. He met all the demands of Justice…having fulfilled the law and dying in our place the propitiation for our sins. And those of the whole world.

    No pagan Trinity here. God the Father different than God the Son and different from God the Holy Spirit. Modalism is error from pagans.

    Trinity was formed to make the Jewish God conform to the Roman Mithras, right down to the date of December 25. It took 3 centuries and the Roman Legion to enforce the Trinity doctrine. Kinda makes one wonder if that is why Jesus opined as to whether He would find the faith when He returned to earth. I am a father, a son, a husband, a minister, a cowboy, a patriot, and many other things but I am One Person not some schizophrenic MPD case.

    The church and believed for over 20 centuries. Modal was defeated in the early church and that error started again in 1915. It is an error but doesn’t separate me from fellowship with oneness a people. Just let them know ” let’s not get into debates over the Trinity, or Jesus only controversies.

    How might it be so difficult for God to self-reveal Himself in three distinct but equal persons? I think not. He still can do it even thousand persons if He really wills (but thank God that he does it only in three persons).

    Jesus has two complete natures: one fully human and one fully divine. What the doctrine of the hypostatic union teaches is that these two natures are united in one person in the God-man. Jesus is not two persons. He is one person. The hypostatic union is the joining (mysterious though it be) of the divine and the human in the one person of Jesus.

    John 17:20-21
    20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;

    21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, artin me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
    How can we be one with them, if that is are we part of the Godhead

    Concerning hypostatic union, how about this word “symbiosis”? Please, comment. Thanks.

  • Reply September 10, 2018

    Varnel Watson

    I dont like “symbiosis” used in theology – especially Orthodox theology, It was pressured from political agendas to mean things that have nothing to do with the church – like “symbiosis” between church and state in Constantine’s Byzantium

    I read lots of posts but no explanations Terry Wiles I just don think Scotty Searan can explain it without the Holy Spirit being a person If there is a away around it I just dont know it

    RT @Felicia Goddard The Trinity is three separate persons one God the father the son the Holy Spirit equals one God. This is what we see throughout the entire Bible. We here the Gospel of John chapter 1 proclaiming the Trinity and explaining that Christ is eternal and equal in essence with the Father when he says “In the beginning the Word was with the Father and the father was with the Word.” Then we learn that the spoken Spoken-word of God becomes flesh. This is not the written word as some people are in error to believe. This is not the Bible which the Greek word for Bible or for writing is translated as Scripture. So this is flash which is completely God 100% God and 100% human. This is the Son of God the only begotten Son see John 3:16. The father is still in heaven note the son praise to Him.
