Urgen Moltmann: Eschatological Millenarianism

The modern rejection of historicism is NOT unwarranted. In his treaties the City of God, Augustine believes the Byzantian Empire is GOD’s Kingdom of the millennium (which it obviously was NOT). For this and other reasons Urgen Moltmann rejects historical millennialism, ON the BASIS of the postmillennial vision which believes secular or religious institutions can be equated with the kingdom of God.

Instead, he argues in favor of eschatological millenarianism, which is the belief that the present order will end only to usher in the messianic kingdom in its fullness. He argues that millennial option is a “necessary picture of hope” that speaks powerfully the tyranny of the present order, AND that IT is the Christological hope of resurrection of the Church and the hope of a future for Israel.
