To my Pentecostal colleagues: if your church leader were to call on you to exercise your gift of tongues in order for the church to receive some word from the Lord edifying, comforting or exhorting the body would you be able to respond immediately or would you have to tarry and wait for an utterance?
What are your thoughts?

I would submit in so far as I can pray with my understanding in my tongue and as a person who is in the Spirit. I could also ask the Holy Ghost to speak through me, if He wills, making myself available for His use. But I could not, nor do I have the capacity, to speak a word in tongues to the church, much less to interpret the same, as I or the Pastor wills.

Christopher, if you let the Holy Spirit speak through you can the Holy Spirit say something that may not be according to scripture? Can anyone question the validity of what the Holy Spirit says through you?
I grew up in a Pentecostal denomination and it was blasphemy to ever question what the Holy Spirit said through a person.

Charles, if the Holy Ghost is speaking it will be truth, since He is the Spirit of truth. If it’s not true then it’s not the Spirit of God.

Is the witness in my heart infallible, inerrant? Does it have to align with scripture? Can it be judged by another sitting by?

I personally feel one would have to “Tarry a few”! Being “called on” to “exercise one’s Gifts” is not something to be mechanically manipulated,or done”impromptu”!

Charles, ultimately the written word is the authority. There is also the role and function of other gifts and offices, such as elders, that can test and intervene in the directing of the service or the correcting of an abuse if needed.

So it is not actually the Holy Ghost speaking in us (He gives the utterance) it is us speaking and it is our will involved. Paul said I speak in tongues more than ye all. He was in control!
The earlier comment is wrong: // “Our thoughts matter little. It is written “as the spirit gave them utterance.” It is the Spirit speaking and not you.”//
Our thoughts matter a lot – it is you speaking and the Spirit gives the utterance. It can be spoken “impromptu”!!!

I think you are forcing a conclusion that isn’t necessarily warranted. Not everything done in the name of the Spirit is actually the Spirit.

undoubtedly so in a US military chapel in Dachau, Germany in 1967. I, I, I, spoke in tongues and the Holy Spirit gave the indistinguishable utterance! I don’t have to tarry for the utterance, it is my prayer language to use at my will!!!! Yes I danced in circles!!! ain’t stopped dancing! bout to dance now!

I am doing the speaking, they were speaking, Paul was speaking and the Holy Spirit gave the utterance. We tarry once and not over and over for/at every occasion and opportunity. It is a gift to be used at will and subject to our will and not our emotions and feelings. It is our gift and at our disposal.

I was classical, historical Pentecostal and always shunned Charismatic renewal! I tried to follow scriptural Pentecostalism!

heard of a church where they ask you to step out if you speak in tongues and invite you to attend their tongue speaking service on friday

Unless you can exercise the other gifts at will as well, you would have to wait for Spirit to inspire. And if you can exercise the gifts at will then you have a moral and evangelical obligation to proceed to the nearest hospital or hospice at once
