“Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles. He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.”
– Matthew 12:18, 19
One night our service was almost overrun by a dozen crips in the tenderloin . A man they had been beating up ran into our service to escape. I stood up and preached the gospel and rebuked the violence on the street.
A well meaning Christian opposed the preaching, misquoting this verse in Matthew. as if Jesus Christ did not himself lift his voice preaching “repent and believe the gospel.” Supposing that Jesus somehow whispered his rebukes to the hypocrites .
The meaning of the verse and its fulfillment in Christ means he didn’t start riots or incite violence in the street. He did not throw off restraint. Jesus was not a rebel to God or the temple. To the contrary, he often sent the healed to testify to the priest, and honored the law of Moses. Jesus taught love which is the true fulfillment of the law. And he openly preached with power.
That night it was the christians that opposed me , but the homeless people thanked me for standing up to gang and preaching Jesus Christ . Peace
