IS TITHING INCUMBENT ON MODERN CHRISTIANS? It is not. Rather it should be an example for us that if Israel under the Law was expected to give a minimum of 10%, we under grace who have received much more should give more rather than less. “Under the Law, the Israelites were required to give a minimum of 10 percent and much more, if they were to be obedient to the Law, including 10 percent to the Levites, 10 percent to the Temple, and 10 percent for the festivals, which was eaten by themselves in Jerusalem, along with additional offerings for the poor. When these tithes and offerings are added up, the ancient Israelites were giving more than 25 percent of their annual income.” (Richard E. Averbeck, “Tithing and Offerings,” New International Dictionary of Old Testament Theology and Exegesis.) The NT does not require tithing, but it does teach proportionate, generous, cheerful, sacrificial, and regular giving (I Cor 16:1-2; II Cor 8:1 – 9:15). 10% is only a rule of thumb or guideline, but it can be a legalistic burden if viewed as a mandate for Christians.

- Unknown — Aug 11, 2026 06:00 PM: If we were serious about evangelism, we would give like we should.
- Unknown — Aug 11, 2026 10:24 AM: Amen! Let the giving be generous, cheerful, and sacrificial.
