what does “emergent” mean when connected to Church, Emergent Church?
Ricky Grimsley [11/20/2015 8:39 PM]
Coming to forefront, moving into prominence? Emerging into the false religion of endtime fame?
Roger David [11/20/2015 8:47 PM]
The church I attend has the name of their Youth Group as “Emergent”. I have no idea why.
These are some of the things “Emerging” churches share in common.
An awareness of and attempt to reach those in the changing postmodern culture.
An attempt to use technology, i.e., video, slide shows, internet.
A broader approach to worship using candles, icons, images, sounds, smells, etc.
An inclusive approach to various, sometimes contradictory belief systems.
An emphasis on experience and feelings over absolutes.
Concentration on relationship-building over proclamation of the Gospel.
Shunning stale traditionalism in worship, church seating, music, etc.
A de-emphasis on absolutes and doctrinal creeds
A re-evaluation of the place of the Christian church in society.
A re-examination of the Bible and its teachings.
A re-evaluation of traditionally held doctrines.
A re-evaluation of the place of Christianity in the world
There is no official single Emerging Church or Emerging Church doctrine, so there is no unified structure to examine.
Roger David [11/20/2015 8:48 PM]
I would call the Emergent church the hippies of the church world. There is some good about them…some bad about them.
Ricky Grimsley [11/20/2015 8:55 PM]
I Would be skeptical off most everything in that list.
David Lavoie [11/20/2015 9:26 PM]
“The Emergent Church”. There’s a Book written I think by Michael Boyd. CAN’JT REMEMBER but I readx the Book. Horrible.
Horrible.
Horrible.
The guys a Proffesor and Capitulates “emergent Christianity” as a Cultural shift within The Modern era where we ..
It’s Horrible.
It’s Pure Heritical.
Iit Seems Flashy, Spiritual, smart and progressive but The Tenents Are More along the Lines Inclusive Pluralism Than Sscripture And “They” are “wise enough to see” the value of The Stories, Ambiance and tradition’s Without Being Hooked Into a Fatalistic or Banal veiw Of scripture. ~ They see it as one of many great and Valuable Systems of belief and spiritual Nurture.
The worship, the word, stories of deep meaning.
~ But are as Convinced others possess this value, so as Not to Abase mankinds ipetus To moral and spiritual Leanings.
Really Bad.
I Think it is Michael Boyd,
Someone Provide The Link.
I’m on an “unsmart Phone”. ~
You all Should look at it.
Charles Page [11/20/2015 9:28 PM]
Roger, what is the source of that list?
Charles Page [11/20/2015 9:32 PM]
Ricky, you maybe confusing emergent with merging – seems to be two different terms
Charles Page [11/20/2015 9:33 PM]
was reading about emergent properties and came across some interesting statements.
John Kissinger [11/21/2015 5:54 AM]
finally a GREAT question – better ask what is an “emergent” church
Ricky Grimsley [11/21/2015 7:12 AM]
All the prechers that are considered “emergent” are people I would run from. I confused nothing. The emergent church is also merging into one giant religion.
John Kissinger [11/21/2015 8:04 AM]
after some observation, emergent is really a new name of independent churches that try to separate from mainline denominations
Ricky Grimsley [11/21/2015 8:20 AM]
Its just an excuse to not have any doctrine. To be inclusive. There is a while lot of “chrislam” and new age mixed in with this. Not to mention the submission to the pope that many are doing.
John Kissinger [11/21/2015 8:26 AM]
So says Bob DeWaay who exposes the core belief that unifies the Emergent Church its eschatology. He demonstrates that in their system every other Christian concept is open to discussion and contradiction, yet their definition of eschatology remains constant and fixed; it is their sole unifying foundation. Without their eschatology there is no Emergent Church. Many have attempted to understand the movement, but have met with frustration when they encounter undefined language and contradictory beliefs that are inconsistent within the text and between authors. http://www.amazon.com/The-Emergent-Church-Undefining-Christianity/dp/0578009994
Ricky Grimsley [11/21/2015 8:35 AM]
What is their eschatology..jesus wont come till we fix the world? The kingdom is here now. The next world leader we see will be jesus?
John Kissinger [11/21/2015 8:36 AM]
emerging church is a Christian movement of the late 20th and early 21st centuries that crosses a number of theological boundaries: participants are described as Protestant, post-Protestant, evangelical, post-evangelical, liberal, post-liberal, conservative, post-conservative, anabaptist, adventist, reformed… #mixAlot http://www.ericbarger.com/emailers/2009/update4-14-2009/update4-14-2009.htm
Ricky Grimsley [11/21/2015 8:41 AM]
Cant any just answer a question with a forty page cut and paste?
John Kissinger [11/21/2015 8:43 AM]
guess emerging answers have a postmodern lengthiness 🙂
Charles Page [11/21/2015 10:41 AM]
Christian fundamentalist have a definition of “emergent” however what is a scholar’s definition?
Roger David [11/21/2015 10:43 AM]
The Emergent church has no official standards. There can be no scholarly definition of them. Just generalized observations.
Charles Page [11/21/2015 10:46 AM]
the “hipster pastor” is a nerd’s perspective of Emergent pastor.
John Kissinger [11/21/2015 11:16 AM]
will it be right to state that emergent churches focus on more on the community of worship than on the purity of doctrine and praxis?
Charles Page [11/21/2015 11:19 AM]
they seem to be seeking to be sinner friendly. If that is the case then sinners are “hipsters” and need salvation!
John Kissinger [11/21/2015 11:22 AM]
so would that be more focus on numbers than morals or not?
Roger David [11/21/2015 11:24 AM]
My personal observation is their focus is much like Bethel. It’s all about community and making sure everyone feels welcomed and accepted despite their lifestyle or doctrine.
Ricky Grimsley [11/21/2015 11:24 AM]
Doesnt sound like paul the apostle would go there.
