Did the serpent sin before Adam and Eve did?

1 John 3:8: for the devil sinneth from the beginning.
The serpent lied to Eve before Adam’s fall. If lying is a sin, and death comes from sin, how could death come as a result of Adam’s sin instead of the serpent’s?
