Just because something is in the Bible, does not mean it is God’s intention. Killing is also in the Bible. Surely we are not going to say it is allowed.

God GAVE many of those he favored many wives. I don’t know. If it wasn’t his intention, he has a funny way of making that intention known. Maybe it took him a few thousand years to figure out it always ended in a mess.
