“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.”
– 1 Thessalonians 5:21
I think I passed the pastor’s test. Unknowingly. yesterday my pastor asked to go hit the streets after the Sunday service . we go together at least once a week . over a year now . but this time he asked to go to my regular street preaching spots . he said “introduce me to some of the people you know.” I didn’t catch it at the time. I said “I don’t know anybody”
So we hit the streets over in one of the worst neighboods in america . several corners with large homeless population and filth and crowded sidewalks and people using . smoking meth shooting up and angrily yelling at nobody. we walked and talked and prayed with men and women, their comfort and strength. Sharing the love of Christ .
We providentially meet a young christian working. wiping down door knobs . we have seen each other around . he heard me preach on the streets
So we faithfully walked the streets where real hope and living hope can mean the difference between despair and death and life eternal. After a couple of hours we meet a man on the street . lives in a subsidized single room. No bath or kitchen just a room . but he was happy to see me. I’ve seen him on the streets he’s always been respectful to the preaching of Jesus Christ and the gospel. We prayed. he offered me a twenty . I’m soo bad about taking money . I just couldn’t . then he offered us both a fish sandwich. it was still hot, but I just couldn’t. I was so touched. it was so kind . the last thing he said. He enjoyed my preaching and could hear me way down the block .
this morning it hit me. the pastor wanted to see some fruit from the street preaching . we’ve been talking about the street preachers. frankly some of the street preachers are more of a problem than a blessing to the local body. this morning though I realized that God in his mercy tested me and maybe proved me. unknowingly. that Jesus is really something. maan he’s GOOD!
