A STUDY IN THE SCRIPTURES

“Lovers of Darkness and Haters of Light!”

“And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God” (John 3:19-21).

In the Scriptures the word “darkness” usually refers to a spiritual darkness which represents a lifestyle which is contrary to the Will of God. However, Jesus claimed to be the light of the world: “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (John 5:12).

We are told that light (Jesus) has come into the world, however, we are also told that there were those who rejected this Light (Jesus) because their deeds were evil (darkness). Please notice, it doesn’t say that they could not come to the Light, but, they would not come to the Light, because their deeds were evil (darkness).

We are also told that those who love darkness, hates the Light (Jesus). The reason for this is that the Light (Jesus and His Teachings) exposes those deeds that are committed in darkness. No one wants their evil deeds exposed, but this what Light does!

Jesus came into the world to call all to repentance; once the darkness has been exposed by the Light, which is the Word of God; individuals must make a decision; to continue in their evil ways or repent and follow Jesus. This is why many refuse to come to Jesus for forgiveness and acceptance into the family of God. For they love their darkness more that the Light of the world. Please remember it is not that they cannot come to the Light, but they refuse to come to the Light!
