Isaiah 9:6:

For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

What does this mean? That the government will be based on Jesus, or that the government will hurt Jesus?

This is one of those passages that is so easy to gloss over and to add our own meaning.. The NLT says that the gov. will rest upon his souldiers and all the high titles listed seems to clearly predict that He will be the head of the gov and bear the responsibilities. Then of course the next question is; when will this happen? Many Jews wondered if Jesus might be that person when they saw thousands following him. Yet when they saw him on a donkey and then on the cross most dropped their hope that Jesus was the one. So it didn’t happen the first century. Some of the wording in Isa. 9 seems to be poetic and carried away with excessive expectations, for instance, ” he will rule forever” does that mean that he will go on living while his constitutes die off generation by generation? There are many other issues depending on whether we take this literally or whether we think of it as we do some of the Psalms.

What does this phrase exactly mean? Does it derive from the story in Isiah ch. 8 or is it a completely different application? Robert Borders
