Do you have to know the demon’s name in order to cast it out?

Glynn Brown [08/14/2015 9:03 AM]
No.in fact some claim that it prolongs the exorcism

John Kissinger [08/14/2015 9:11 AM]
This is interesting. Can you copy a link to read more about it? I’ve read that it speeds it up. Without a name you’re just guessing

Joe Collins [08/14/2015 11:21 AM]
No. I’m cast many demons out without knowing their names.

God didn’t try to talk to them when he and the disciples casted them out, so why should i?

John Kissinger [08/14/2015 11:22 AM]
So how does this go practically? I cast out demon of … ?!?

Joe Collins [08/14/2015 11:23 AM]
Also knowing it’s name doesn’t stop it from doing anything in the future. Its only the power of the blood that has anything to do with it.

Thinking that knowing it’s name to stop it in the future is a form of witchcraft in which they believe that by knowing it’s name it They have the ability to control it

Joe Collins [08/14/2015 11:25 AM]
You don’t. I can see that you haven’t casted any demons out of anyone yet?

Its really simple. You make sure you are living right and prayed up. Then you demand the demon to leave in the name of Jesus.

It then leaves.

John Kissinger [08/14/2015 11:26 AM]
🙂 been doing it 25yrs. but so much for your gift of discernment

Joe Collins [08/14/2015 11:26 AM]

I do not agree. I believe we need to preach the Gospel as described in the Bible, which includes the death of Christ and His resurrection. This seems a minority view among Pentecsotals if we go only by the content of sermons and altar calls these days.

Can there be sin in the same body as the Holy Spirit? Can a Christian sin?

Troy Day I can think of the church in Hammond, IN and a large church in Chicago as two of the better known churches that provide sacks to attendees to barf up demons. I used to see a lot of mass deliverance meetings in the 1970s with teachers such as Don Basham and Derek Prince.

Robert Borders The idea that demons come out with vomit, and then offering comit bags can set people up to vomit without anything supernatural going on. The word for ‘spirit’ means ‘wind.’ I’m glad people who cast out evil spirits/winds haven’t made a doctrine out of the ‘evil wind’ thing.

I’d imagine the vomit deliverance meetings stink. Can you imagine what an evil wind deliverance meeting would smell like?

I suppose vomiting can be more easily induced psychologically or by smelling other people doing it than the wind thing. They’d have to eat beans or cabbage or something.

I will keep to scriptural integrity with this passage as well — 32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you. Troy Day – well the way you spoke about me for one. Some people, when corrected, hold grudges instead of handling things like a christian should. It is just pride. I was seeing if you had something against me? – Reread what I wrote about not having a definition. Perhaps you can give a scriptural definition on the word of wisdom and not just wisdom. The word of wisdom as mentioned in 1 Corinthians is what I think we are discussing.

here is what I can tell about the word of wisdom using the bible as the source. 1 Cor. 12:8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;—-1. The Spirit gives this gift out. 2 We know it is a Godly gift and is real. 3. We know the Spirit gives it out to people . So it is a real gift. I just don’t see the scripture detailing what it is. Thus it is open to human assumption, guesswork, conjecture. That often leads to error.

It is important to know the name(s) of the demon for it will give you the ” personality” of the dude…especially when the devil refuses to live..depart from ” his” house.
It is more effective and practical to address the demon by ” name” during deliverance rarher than cast out them blindly…
We all.know that they are ” unclean” spirits but i think when we address them.by names…(and they have names really) we become more precise.
In normal life if you find a group of ten people lets say ten men and you shout at them ” hey men” you wont get a good response compared to when you call out a specific name eg ” Hey Mr .Troy…”

Isara Mo Yes, God can reveal sth hidden to his servant but He also wants the servant to LEARN some things by himself.
Jesus was fully man and fully God and there are numerous examples whereby in His ministry He used word of wisdom but in many instances Jesus asked questions from those he was ministering to get information.
He used the word of wisdom during his encounter with the Samaritan woman (about her five husbands) but he used normal interogation to get the names of the demons at the Gadarenes.

I thank you for this question. I’ve been thinking on this very thing. We had quite the case on the street Saturday. Some good preaching broke him up pretty good. He was really out of it. He was just released from some hospital. A brother spoke with and bought him something to eat. Another brother took him down the “Romans road” o believe he was sincere. Then he layed down and started manifesting rage and something very ungodly. Another brother tried to get a name. He got “Jehosaphat” so I don’t think that was very helpful. His wristband said Merlin which wasn’t very helpful either. I think it was a fake name. Devils are known liars anyhow.
But we broke the power of the devil in Jesus name. It was kind obvious drugs were involved so that’s witchcraft, the occult, one young brother first time preaching just went after it and wouldn’t stop. Maybe there was a half dozen Christian’s praying by now. Everybody was done and pretty tired but everybody stuck with it. Even your’s truly. After about a half hour he popped out of it and says “I feel so free” so we got him to start calling on Jesus his mercy to save and mighty power to heal and deliver. I can’t tell you the specifis anymore than that. But I think it was the the brother that wouldn’t quit. He must have been a bapticostal you know how they get with they get the holy ghost. But I believe he was genuinely saved. We’ll have to follow up of course. Some one knows where lives.
I don’t think this answers the question but maybe it will help. Just keep praying and don’t quit, like Jesus taught in the story “Importunate Widow” that would be my best advice.

Jesus had already established FULL in control of this interaction in that the demons recognized that this was the one who had ALREADY destined them for torment. They cried out before he even said a word. Also in THIS case there seems to be a purpose to asking the name . Even though a name was given, There were actually MANY demons present in this man. The interaction lets us know just how tormented this man was and that no matter how many demons were present, Jesus still had FULL power over them. To my knowledge, this is the only time recorded where the demon’s name was asked.

Troy Day We have one example where a Jesus asked the demon’s name. Other times he didn’t. We have an example where Paul and Silas didn’t. So there’s no DOCTRINE on this. The only name that’s ALWAYS required when casting out demons is JESUS. Jesus said that in “…My name they shall cast out Devils…”

Darryl Forbes oh no no no 🙂 what about Rev 2-3 How many examples are there? And demons named like Jezebel and others No we dont have ONE example – do I need to paste the verses so you read them again?

Why do you ask for the demon’s name?

The Ritual requires it, for a specific purpose. Naming something, or knowing its name, means having power over that thing. In fact, God gives Adam the power to name things. At the instant that the demon reveals his name, it shows that he has been weakened; if he doesn’t say it, he is still strong.

Troy Day again, that’s not a teaching. That seems to be a case by case situation. They weren’t always named. We need to be careful about making rules where there are none. SOMETIMES they were Named. SOMETIMES they weren’t. We need to simply leave it at that. He SAID we’d cast them out in HIS name. That’s the only RULE. If a God leads us to make them reveal their name, do it. If he leads us to simply cast them out , do it. That’s all.

I do what I call ‘Gentle Deliverance’ and it follows the healing of memories: ‘Inner Healing means the healing of emotions. It means prayers for healing can be done for our emotional issues as well as our physical issues.
Our ‘flesh’ is all the memories laid down through our life in which the perspective embedded in the memory is not God’s perspective. Inner Healing is the process of redeeming our memories to that God’s perspective replaces that of the old man, flesh, childhood.
Christian Inner Healing is a professional practice that aligns with the psychology of memory reconsolidation – permanent change of emotional learning. It differs from other forms of psychotherapy because Prayer for Jesus to be Lord come early in the process and listening for God’s truth is central to the process.
Deliverance is a minor outcome of full, complete and permanent healing of the memory. After the Inner Healing there is no stronghold – no place the demon can hang on to – and a very quiet simple prayer completes the process.’ No name needed. No exorcism needed. That is the different path that I am on.

Counsellors, therapists, psychiatrists and psychotherapists help people by talking with them about their personal and emotional problems. I am a registered psychotherapist who also uses prayer as part of the therapy. Inner healing means prayer for healing of emotions. We now know that healing of emotional issues means healing of memories. We now know that the essential key to that is the belief or perspective integrated into the memory. Once that is identified and with the memory in an active state one can transform the core belief. In Christian Inner Healing this is done with listening prayer in order to receive the revelation from God of God’s truth.

Thinking that knowing it’s name to stop it in the future is a form of witchcraft in which they believe that by knowing it’s name it They have the ability to control it

You don’t. I can see that you haven’t casted any demons out of anyone yet?

Its really simple. You make sure you are living right and prayed up. Then you demand the demon to leave in the name of Jesus.

It then leaves.
