  What in Scripture constitutes a heresy? Where in Scripture is any tribulational view called a heresy? We need to be careful to call heresy only what Scripture calls heresy. We may disagree on various points of doctrine that are secondary or tertiary matters of interpretation. We can hold strong convictions about a tribulation view without calling a different view heresy. In Scripture, heresy is that which denies the deity or humanity of Christ, the Trinity, the Virgin Birth, salvation by grace through faith, Christ’s atonement for our sins, the literal physical resurrection of Christ, heaven or hell and Christ’s Coming, the authority of Scripture. These are first tier doctrines. Second tier doctrines are denominational distinctives, third tier are things that evangelical Bible-believing Christians disagree on, but agree to disagree in love. In other words, the motto attributed to Augustine: “Unity in things essential (Eph 4:1-7); liberty in things non-essential (Romans 14); love in all things (1 John 3:11).

  Would you agree that the term “heresy” is usually reserved for something that takes you out of Christianity?

  Jamie Brown Yes, I would agree with that. Heresy is teaching that denies the basic essentials of the Christian faith–Deity & humanity of Christ, Trinity, Virgin Birth of Christ, The Incarnation, the lostness of man and need of a Savior, the reality of heaven & hell, the authority and inerrancy of Scripture, salvation by grace through faith, the atoning death of Christ, the literal physical resurrection of Christ, and His 2nd Coming.
